339 - Days Today

Useful

1. Useful
Today is Towel Day. Fans of Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are encouraged to carry a towel today in remembrance of his "the humor and insight." (Quotes used because this phrase is taken from the website, not because I'm being sarcastic, like later when I considered putting quotes around the word "actor" when used to describe Mike Myers.)

The Force

2. The Force
Today also marks the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. Fans of the classic film franchise have suggested that May 25th become the Universal Day of the Jedi in remembrance of a time that existed after Jawas and the Millennium Falcon but prior to Jar Jar Binks and Midichlorians. And don't try to tell me that Revenge of the Sith was good. You know in your heart of heart that it sucks. Just admit it already.

Born

3. Born
May 25th also marks the birth date of musician Miles Davis, who would have been 81 years old. A lot of people will tell you to listen to Kind of Blue, but I'm recommending this Milt Jackson collaboration.

Celebs

4. Celebs
A bunch of other "famous" people were born today as well, including, actors, Mike Myers, Cillian Murphy and Ian McKellen; singer, Lauryn Hill; writers Raymond Carver, W.P. Kinsella, Ralph Waldo Emmerson, Robert Ludlum and Poppy Z. Brite; director, actor, puppeteer and voice of Yoda, Frank Oz:; and comics creators, Barry Windsor-Smith and Stan Sakai. I'm sure a lot of other great and nice people were born to day too, But I've probably never heard of most of them.

Missing

5. Missing
Today is also National Missing Children's Day so if you've found any kids recently, this is your best opportunity to turn them in.

Egg Shrink

5. Egg Shrink

291 - Easter

The Rites of Spring

1. The Rites of Spring
Like most Christian holidays, Easter is really just a much older pagan holiday with the word Jesus thrown in there. Even the word "Easter" refers to Eostre, the ancient goddess of birth and new beginnings. What was the first of the ten commandments again?

Pseudo-Peeps

2. Pseudo-Peeps
Use this recipe to make your own marshmallow peeps. For a simpler option, you can make some flat, cookie cutter peep-esque things. or go hog-wild and make these fancy pants saffron flavored meringue chicks.

Geek Orthodox Easter

3. Geek Orthodox Easter
"As Easter weekend falls upon us and you're sitting in front of a computer, you should probably come to grips with the fact that you may be something of a geek. In honor of the celebration you should be having, productdose has put together a list of products that will help you get through all of the working, gaming, or research you're doing instead of enjoying your holiday weekend."

Intent to Sell

4. Intent to Sell

I decided to do another Halloween day, which is weird because I don't even really like Halloween

Here's a great story about a guy that was willing to go to great lengths to scare passengers on a haunted hay ride.

Cruelty to Animals

2. Cruelty to Animals
Do people really think that their pets like to wear costumes? I guess my dog, Opal Stoltz, who died tragically at an early age, really did like wearing her argyle sweater, but only when it was very cold and she didn't look like an asshole.

Science of Scare

3. Science of Scare
I'm not sure if this is really science. I don't see any evidence of a control group, and there is definitely no falsifiable hypothesizing. Still, "Nothing evokes wild-eyed terror like a chain-saw" sounds pretty good.
