Charles Nelson Reilly: Dead

1. Charles Nelson Reilly: Dead
It is so awesome that an actor, by sheer power of personality, could become a household name by only appearing in guest starring roles. Charles Nelson Reilly never really had a starring role, in fact, for all his appearances, he was never really a regular cast member on any television show. But his appearances on TV throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, especially as a celebrity guest on The Match Game have cemented him in pop culture history.

Script Frenzy

2. Script Frenzy
I'm not sure is two days is enough time to prepare for writing a screenplay, but if you've had an idea for a movie or play that you've been meaning to get down on paper, June 1st is the beginning of a month long writing event that encourages prospective writers to get a 20,000 word script done in only 30 days. They also provide tips on formatting and other writing resources.

Speaking of javascript, these guys mixed up traditional stage magic techniques with some fancy-pants web coding to create an interactive short film that totally screws with your browser windows.

Free Mooninites

1. Free Mooninites
Peter Berdovsky, & Sean Steven, the two "artists" hired to promote the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie by hanging up those LED night-lights that caused so much trouble in Boston a few months ago, have finally had all charges against them dropped. Each man spent 80 hours of community service painting a mural in children's hospital and apologized for the panic they supposedly caused. I'm sure the two million bucks that Turner ponied up didn't hurt either.

Second Hand

2. Second Hand
The eCigarette is a new nicotine delivery device which allows "smokers" to get the wanted buzz from smoking without the need for the dangerous tar and smoke accosiated with traditional cigarettes. What is this going to do to all the unconstitutional anti-smoking laws that have been popping up lately?

324 - Telekinesis

Incredible

1. Incredible
Through the late seventies, a young man named James Hydrick rose to international fame by using his enormous psychic abilities to move pencils and book pages without physically touching them. By the early eighties he was touted as one of the world's leading psychics when he made an appearance on the popular television show That's Incredible.

Defined

2. Defined
In case you don't know, telekinesis or psychokinesis is defined as "the apparent production of motion in objects (as by a spiritualistic medium) without contact or other physical means."

Bunk

3. Bunk
Hot on the heels of his appearance on That's Incredible, Bob Barker invited Hydrick to be a guest on his variety show That's My Line. Barker was skeptical, so he also invited professional debunker James Randi to be a part of the program. Hydrick performed his page-turning feat successfully but his powers mysteriously failed him when Randi added a simple control to the experiment.

Confessions

4. Confessions
Shortly after his disastrous appearance on That's My Line, Hydrick revealed to investigative journalist, Dan Korem, that he was not actually psychic but that he had put his years in prison to good use by practicing a technique of blowing currents of air imperceptibly from his mouth to cause light objects to move. The video of his confession can be purchased from International Focus Press.

Testy

5. Testy
So, even though there is no actual evidence that psychokinesis has any basis in reality, you might still believe it is real. Here's your chance to see for yourself if you have any psychic powers yourself. This telekinesis test produces a series of random ones and zeros. Probability suggests that average occurrence of either digit should be about equal. By concentrating on one number or the other see if you can influence a statistically improbable amount of that number to appear.

318 - Colorized

Blindness

1. Blindness
See if you can follow what is going on in this card trick video. Don't worry, the secrets are revealed at the end.

Whatsits

2. Whatsits
Upload a photograph and find out its average color as well as ten complimentary colors. This is a very useful tool for building a design based around any image, especially nice for website construction.

Color - Match

3. Color - Match
Photoshop has so much awesome stuff going on that it must be impossible for anyone to know about all of it. I wish I knew about this color match tool a long time ago. It basically forces one photograph to use the color palette of another. James Delaney of Unfocused Brain uses it to make his digital photos look like classical paintings.

Red Team

4. Red Team
Use both hands to control two different characters. This game is difficult enough, but add in the violent red color scheme and it makes it hard to look at as well. I gave up after level four.

Separation

5. Separation
The first commercially available color films, Kodachrome and Exakta, were developed in the 1930s. However, French and Russian photographers were experimenting with color as early as 1872 with startling results.

Oll Korrect

2. Oll Korrect
This detailed history of how the term "OK" came to be a legitimate part of the English language boils down to basically one thing: people in the 1830s and 1840s has some really weird ideas of comedy. Next, the author is working out the history of the term "my bad."

3. Where There's Smoke
How to make smoke appear magically from your fingertips using only a bathtub and a box of matches.

I first thought the homeless parking meter was meant to collect money for temporary use of a spot on the sidewalk for sleeping or panhandling or whatever. That isn't what it is intended for at all.

248 - Google!

Find a Tattoo of a Weasel

1. Find a Tattoo of a Weasel
Today's post will include my favorite google searches that have led visitors to this site. Even though I think it is pretty funny, I won't include all the suckers that come here looking for The New Paris Hilton Sex Videos.

2. "The Secret" Positive Thought Christian
My criticism of The Secret has really brought in a lot of viewers. Unfortunately, the majority of them are looking for the Christian angle on the subject. I doubt most of them care about the bad science for which "The Secret Crew" is responsible. I mean, come on, six days, virgin birth, talking snake, etc.

Operation Mincemeat

3. Sweet Operation Mincemeat
By far, the largest number of google searchers that end up here are looking for images relating to Operation Mincemeat. Maybe because google images only supplies two pages of results. The real question is; why do so many people want to see pictures of a dead body after it has been recovered from the sea. Sickos!

Awesome Magician in Grocery Store

Christian Art Prints with Hidden Messages and Cows

Christian Art Prints with Hidden Messages and Cows
This is my favorite one by far, and the one which made me think to compile this list. I see all of these topics gathered around the site so I understand why google sent this poor guy here, I just can't figure out what in the hell he might have been really searching for.

Two Faced Calf: Dead

1. Two Faced Calf: Dead
A calf born in December with two faces reached the end of her short life last Friday. Her story will live on in one of the Ripley's Believe It or Not museums across America.

General Tso's Chicken

2. General Tso's Chicken
The convoluted story of how a semi-Taiwanese meal named after a Hunanese general got sugared up in America and then made it's way back to Hunan where it is now touted as a traditional dish.

Great Balls of Fire

3. Great Balls of Fire
Where the hell was I when all these sightings of fireballs were reported across the midwest? I was in-freaking-side. It is zero damn degrees out there.

Possible Criminal Activity

4. Possible Criminal Activity
Simple instuctions on how to hack the Coinstar machine in your grocery store so that you won't have to pay the service fee. This is probably illegal, so you should really just go to your bank and ask them to give you the paper money you so desperately need.

Armstrong

1. Armstrong
Personally, I never had a problem with the missing "A." I always understood the meaning of the Neil Armstrong moon landing statement and thought the lack of an "A" made it seem a little more poetic.

Murderer

2. Murderer
If this really is one of only two original John Wilkes Booth wanted posters, it seems like it would be worth way more than $4000.

Waste of a Protest

3. Waste of a Protest
In protest against Jackass 2, the owner of Lorraine Theatre in Hoopeston, Illinois shut down for two weeks. I wonder why he didn't just show classic movies for a while, thus keeping his employees employed, and bringing a little culture to Hoopeston.

Multi-Lifts

4. Multi-Lifts
Although I know the concept behind double and triple card lifts, this guy is pretty slick and the trick goes basically flawlessly with no evidence of what is really happening. He's a real champion.

Porn or Pony

5. Porn or Pony
Take a look at this list of names and decide which ones belong to porn stars and which ones belong to little ponies. I managed to get every single one wrong.

James Van Allen: Dead 1. James Van Allen: Dead
Ever discover anything awesome in outer space? This guy did. His participation in the discovery of the radiation belts around the Earth was so great, they named them after him

Three Mexican fishermen discovered by a Taiwanese trawler after being adrift in the ocean for nearly a full year. I'm no geographer, but I'm sure Mexico has to be pretty far from Taiwan.

Friend or Foe? 3. Friend or Foe?
Even in 1953, the publishers of Modern Mechanix should have known this was ridiculous.

Either David Copperfield is setting the scene for an upcoming TV special, or he is (insert euphemism for insane here.) Take your pick.

Ephemera 5. Ephemera
I was going to pick just one post from Swapatorium to link to, but I spent a while there and decided the whole site is worth a look. My favorite parts: this 1920's sketchbook, and the cool Mad Magazine-esque font used for the page title.
