319 - Genre Pictures

Drive-In

1. Drive-In
Another invite to my outdoor double feature. I'm pushing the boundaries next Friday with The Tenant and Suspiria. I haven't seen either one, but I think they should both be pretty safe, without much nudity or swearing. Probably some gore, though. Anyway, everyone reading this is invited, though I imagine only a couple of people that know me will show up.

Grindhousery

2. Grindhousery
Boing Boing beat me to it but I here it is anyway, a collection of mainstream film posters redesigned into the style of genre, and exploitation pictures. It should be noted that six months ago virtually no one knew the term "grindhouse."

It Came From the Lab

3. It Came From the Lab
Scary stories of scientific research straight out of a horror or sci-fi movie. Reviving long dead viruses, human limb regeneration, vicious genetically altered carnivores, the solar shield, and merciless robot soldiers.

Sci-Fi Spectacular

4. Sci-Fi Spectacular
This is where I'll be tomorrow, numbing my ass with over 12 straight hours of classic and modern science fiction films at The Music Box Theatre in Chicago. From Metropolis to Starship Troopers.

Barbarella

5. Barbarella
"In the far future, a highly sexual woman is tasked with finding and stopping the evil Duran-Duran. Along the way she encounters various unusual people." If there's one Hollywood star I want to see play that role it is Kate Beckinsale. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to feel the same way. Plus, look at this awesome photoshopery I did over here.

318 - Colorized

Blindness

1. Blindness
See if you can follow what is going on in this card trick video. Don't worry, the secrets are revealed at the end.

Whatsits

2. Whatsits
Upload a photograph and find out its average color as well as ten complimentary colors. This is a very useful tool for building a design based around any image, especially nice for website construction.

Color - Match

3. Color - Match
Photoshop has so much awesome stuff going on that it must be impossible for anyone to know about all of it. I wish I knew about this color match tool a long time ago. It basically forces one photograph to use the color palette of another. James Delaney of Unfocused Brain uses it to make his digital photos look like classical paintings.

Red Team

4. Red Team
Use both hands to control two different characters. This game is difficult enough, but add in the violent red color scheme and it makes it hard to look at as well. I gave up after level four.

Separation

5. Separation
The first commercially available color films, Kodachrome and Exakta, were developed in the 1930s. However, French and Russian photographers were experimenting with color as early as 1872 with startling results.

304 - Advertising

Reality

1. Reality
I'm sure everyone knows that restaurant advertisements don't do a very ethical job of depicting the reality of what is being advertised. A self proclaimed "Pulitzer-caliber project" puts the advertisers to the test with side by side comparisons. Surprisingly, the actual products from McDonald's look pretty similar to the ad photos, the KFC one is terrible. Anyone associated with it should be ashamed..

Speaking of Ads

2. Speaking of Ads
This collection of ads for novelty products from the back of vintage comic books could probably go on forever. They used to sell some really awesome stuff. One correction: Those Kryptonite Rocks weren't just painted green, they also glowed in the dark. I know, I had them.

Design

3. Design
If you are interested in graphic design; take a look at this series of short documentaries about some of the most promising independent designers working today. I'm especially partial to the work of Andy Mueller at Ohio Girl.

Serve and Protect

4. Serve and Protect
Advising drivers to slow down via a roadside letterboard, and cheating the municipality out of revenue at the same time.

Classifieds

5. Classifieds
Real ads from the classified section of the newspaper. It’s like a Jay Leno segment, only funny.

1. Tuppence a Day
Take a look at this ridiculously cute video of a tiny, baby duck feeding the fish in a koi pond.

Melt

2. Melt
Bavarian furniture designers, AF GmbH, have designed crazy disposable patio furniture made of vegetable matter. By subscribing to their furniture program you can just dissolve your old chairs when you get tired of them and then replace them with a new design.

Hepatitis

3. Hepatitis
How to build a tattoo gun out of an eclectic toothbrush, a mechanical pencil, and a guitar string. I HIGHLY recommend not using this device to give tattoos to yourself or others.

Eight Bit

4. Eight Bit
Many, many classic nintendo games can be played from the comfort of your web browser.

Creepy

5. Jelly Head
We all know there are a lot of creepy animals living in the depths of the ocean. Check out this human head shaped box jellyfish with two staring eyeballs.

One man's record of everything he and his girlfriend have argued about. Including such things as, "Those little toothpaste speckles you make when you brush your teeth in front of the mirror." "Where to sit in the cinema." and "She really over-reacts whenever she catches me wearing her underwear."

Periodic Print Project

2. Periodic Print Project
Etsy seller, Jennifer Schmitt. has come up with a great way to combine the world of art with the world of science and added in a bit of communal effort to make her project that much better. She is taking contributions for a hand printed periodic table of elements. Each artist designs a 6x6 inch print for an element and eventually they will be combined into one giant table. There are a few elements left unclaimed, so if you are a printmaker, and would like to get involved, do so before they are all snatched up.

Spielberg Power!

3. Spielberg Power!
Steven Spielberg flexed a little bit of his muscle recently by convincing the Motion Picture Association of America to reconsider the R-Rating they slapped on the upcoming Micheal Bay Transformers movie. Without demanding any edits whatsoever, the MPAA dropped the rating down to a PG-13 after spending a few minutes alone in a small room with Mr. Spielberg.

Io Silver

4. Io Silver
Io, one of Jupiter's most prominent moons has volcanoes on its surface and we have the pictures to prove it.

Speaking of Swamp Thing

5. Speaking of Swamp Thing
This filthy Chinese bastard finally washed his hair after 26 years. 26 freaking years! I feel like a goddamn swamp thing if I skip even a single day.

Class 6

1. Class 6
Let's say you just passed your driving test and really want to celebrate. Do you: A. Invite friends over for cake and ice cream. B. Treat your self to a nice dinner. C. Get shitfaced and go out driving your motorcycle. The correct answer is C. Then you should get stopped by the police and have your license revoked.

Those Are Some Good Donuts

2. Those Are Some Good Donuts
NBC affiliate WAGT really wants you to know how good the new Krispy Kreme donuts are.

Electronic Swatchbook

Paper Pilot

4. Paper Pilot
This game doesn't allow you to design your own or fold some complex planes, but it does have a lot of variables that you can adjust. See how far you can throw your virtual airplave.

Baby Knows Presidents

5. Baby Knows Presidents
What is this about? Why does this baby know the presidents?

Possession of Stolen Goods

1. Possession of Stolen Goods
A Norman Rockwell painting stolen from a gallery in 1973 and thought to be missing for the last 34 years turned out to be in Stephen Spielberg's art collection. As soon as he realized the painting was stolen, Spielberg informed the FBI's Art Crime Team.

So Easy A TV Executive Could Have Thought of It

2. So Easy A TV Executive Could Have Thought of It
I know a lot of people think that those Geico commercials are pretty funny, but are they really funny enough to support their own half hour sitcom. Time will tell.

Time Flies

3. Time Flies
Are you tired of wasting time in the long lines at your local post office? Well the USPS has taken steps toward making this wait feel shorter. They are removing the clocks from their offices, so that you won't be aware of how long you wait.

Ban Comic Sans

4. Ban Comic Sans
I usually don't really love the pretension of graphic designers and the derision they always express towards the world's favorite typefaces, but seriously, they are totally right this time.

Slots

5. Slots
Build your own slot car race track and then race against a computer.
